Beyond the Classroom programs were developed to maintain an interest in learning
outside of the classroom and more formal educational settings.

Whether it’s a special treat for an after-school group, a birthday party or a unique
learning experience for a scout troop meeting, the Scotia-Glenville Children's Museum
can bring the same high-quality instruction to leisure and recreation-based time that it is
known for bringing to the classroom.

Beyond the Classroom offers a mix of some of our most popular science-based programs
that enhance formal classroom learning objectives, but with an emphasis on interactive,
discovery-based methods of teaching. Also  available are  art-based programs that
provide materials, instructions and encouragement to foster self-esteem, creative
expression and skill-building in young  artists.

LIFE & SOCIAL SCIENCE PROGRAMS

*Beautiful Butterflies: Learn about the characteristics of insects and life cycle of the
butterfly. Children will participate in a hands-on activity using what they have learned.

Fantastic Colored Lizards: Learn about lizards, see colorful wooden lizards handmade by
Zapotec Indians, and make a brightly colored lizard to keep.

Mysterious Bats: Learn about these fascinating creatures through songs, sounds and
hands-on artifacts.

*Backyard Bugs: Come with us on a bug adventure to explore the world of insects.  Make
a bug catcher for future exciting outdoor activity.

makes a soft faced puppet conveying an emotion determined by each child’s choice.

*What’s the Matter? : Investigate the properties of solids, liquids, and gases through
experiments and discover the secret “Mystery Matter”.

*What’s the Scoop? : Learn about ice cream, and top it off with the hands-on experience
of making it.

Fantastic Beings : Children will write and illustrate tales about their own fabulous
characters that will come alive from their imagination on the "WANTED" poster they create.

*Sand Cards: Create your own unique greeting cards with glue, paint and sand, then
make an envelope to match.

Cooperative Games: With a focus on challenge rather than competition, children grasp
the concept of teamwork and cooperation and enjoy a session of new and favorite
activities.

*Clay Pictures: Design and create an amazing two-dimensional scene with eight colors of
clay.

*The Giving Basket: Construct a chenille stem basket that holds well-wishes and
kindness, meant to be given away to someone in need of compassion.  This is a
wonderful activity for scouts and service-project groups.

JUST FOR FUN

Let's Make Bubbles: We bring a variety of bubble-makers and everything it takes to fill the
air with shimmering spheres of every imaginable size.  Program must be held outdoors.

Beads Galore: What can you do with beads galore?  Make people, animals, or jewelry!
Children catch on fast and adults can’t resist trying their own designs.  A great after-
school program.

Quilts of Gee's Bend: Quilts from Gee's Bend, Alabama, are famous for their beauty.
Quilters used scraps of cloth from old clothes and cotton sacks to make quilts that have
been displayed in museums.  Make your own quilt using scraps of paper.

Marvelous Masks: When you make a mask you create a marvelous character with your
imagination.  Decorate with markers, feathers, felt and pom-poms.

Clothespin Creations: Create animals, people and all kinds of things from clothespins!
Great fun for the end of the school day.

*   program available for birthday parties
